I grew up in Orange and went to Little Cypress-Mauriceville (LCM) high school (the white high school) — West Orange Stark was mostly black. I can remember a pitifully small number of black students at LCM. And I can confirm Vidor had a reputation for being scary as shit. Black folk just didn’t go there. I remember seeing a black reporter in Vidor on TV once and I thought, “Oh I hope she gets out of there okay.” Twelve. I was 12. Rumor when I was coming up was that Vidor had segregated proms, but the truth seems to be more like they didn’t have any black people at all. Not that Orange was any picnic or any less of a racist place. We had fully segregated high schools, they just didn’t cop to it. I felt that line about going to the one mediocre Mexican place in town after church in my soul. Anyway, it’s good to know someone else observed those surroundings growing up in what I lovingly refer to as “The B-hole of Texas” and dared to write about it. Keep telling it like it is.
